More About New Top-Level Domains

AThe existing domain name space contains 21 gTLDs and 255 ccTLDs with multiple operating models. Total global domain name registrations are now more than 205 million. All gTLDs have a designated registry operator who are responsible for the technical operation of the TLD and all domain names registered under it. There are over 900 registrars who provide registration and management services to end users who are accredited to resell domain names.

BThe New Top-Level Domain (TLD) program is being implemented by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number (ICANN) , the governing body of the internet to create competition and promote choice beyond the existing 21 Top Level Domains. New TLDs will open the domain space, foster diversity and encourage competition across the internet which will ultimately benefit internet users globally.

CThe new TLD application process is due to begin in late 2011 and will last between approximately 6 months. Once launched new TLD will span four categories including generic extensions like .ski, brand extensions like .canon, places extension like .london and internationalized extensions like .cидней. Extensions can be applied for by entrepreneurs, brands, public bodies and community groups.

More About ICANN

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a non-for-profit multi-stakeholder organization dedicated to coordinating the Internets unique identifier system. Since its inception, ICANN has been responsible for promoting competition and choice in the domain name marketplace. In 2007 the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) a group that coordinates internet policy for ICANN formally completed and approved its policy development work on new gTLDs, ushering in the dawn of a new internet era.
